News from the Fluorine Research Group
Here are some "news" items from the Fluorine Research Group since 2000, they are largely concerned with meetings and student graduation rather than each time a paper gets accepted or published. 2016
- Congratulation to Amina Ejgandi for successfully defending her PhD thesis, concerning work on fluorinated bidentate phosphines, and testing their applications in catalysis
2014
- Well done to Farouk Al'Issa for successfully defending his PhD thesis, concerning work on fluorinated phosphines, and the award of his Doctorate!
- Alan Brisdon was invited to speak to students and staff at the DFG's Fluorine as the key element (Fluor als Schlusselelement) graduate School in Berlin. There he presented the groups work on fluoroalkenyl, fluoroalkynyl and fluoroalkyl phosphines and fluoroorganometallic chemistry.
- Lulu Al Luhaibi represented the group at the Fluorine - Academia meets Industry and RSC Fluorine Subject Group Annual Postgraduate Meeting in St Andrews.
2013
- After many years with the Brisdon and Godfrey research groups Nick Barnes moves on to a job at Nanaco - We'll miss him!
- And we will also miss Anthony Thomas who a few weeks later also got a job, in his case at Tennant's Chemical Distribution Ltd.
- Congratulations to our two MChem project students Sam Taylor and Rebecca Broomfield not just on their excellent degree results, but also for both having jobs before they graduated!
2012
- Congratulations to Hana Alhanash following her successful PhD thesis defence.
- And a couple of weeks later it was congratulations to Fatma Alhanash following her successful PhD thesis defence.
- Well done to Gregory Price not only did he successfully defend his PhD, but he also got a prestigious EPSRC-funded 12-month University of Manchester Doctoral Prize Fellowship!
2011
- We welcome back Dr Nick Barnes, who joins us to work on derivatives of graphene and related materials, such as graphene oxide.
- We welcome back Anthony Thomas, who joins us to work on fluorographene (fluorographane) and the fluorination of related materials.
- Hana Alhanash represented the group at the 1st international conference on ionic liquids in seperation and purification in Barcelona, Spain.
2010
- Congratulations to Chris Herbert who has his PhD for work on the synthesis of new fluoroalkyl-containing phosphines, their chemistry and coordination complexes.
- At the "Shape of Science" symposium in Manchester Hana Alhanash represented the group at the poster session.
- At the 10th RSC fluorine subject group meeting in Durham we were represented by Farouk Al'issa and Hana Ghaba who both presented posters.
- Congratulations to Sanna and Amina, both of which obtained their MSc degrees, working in the area of phosphorus chemistry.
2009
- At the 9th RSC fluorine subject group meeting in Southampton we were represented by Chris Herbert (who won the postgraduate presentation prize!) Anthony Thomas and Hana Ghaba who both presented posters.
- The group was represented at the 19th International Symposium on Fluorine Chemistry in the Teton mountains by Alan Brisdon, Chris Herbert (both gave talks) and Anthony Thomas (poster).
- Alan Brisdon was an invited plenary speaker at the 2009 International Conference on Fluorine Chemistry in Kyoto, where he presented the groups work on fluoroalkenyl, fluoroalkynyl and fluoroalkyl phosphines.
- Congratulations to Andy Ballantyne who has passed his PhD viva. He successfully defended his thesis describing the preparation, properties and electrochemistry of room-temperature fluorinated ionic liquids.
- Congratulations to Gavin Potter who has received his PhD for his work on the synthesis of CF3-substituted aromatic systems prepared by catalytic cyclisation reactions.
2008
- Chris Herbert represented us with a talk on his fluoroalkyl phosphine work at the 8th RSC Fluorine Subject Group meeting in Newcastle.
2007
- The group was well represented at the 14th SFC in Prague, by Alan Brisdon (talk) Chris Mason (poster), Andy Ballantyne (talk) and Chris Herbert (poster).
2006
- The Manchester Fluorine Group hosted the 6th Royal Society of Chemistry Fluorine Subject Group Meeting. Our work was represented by a talk from Gavin Potter.
2005
- Gareth Rhys Williams gets his PhD - his thesis reports a series of new fluorine-containing phosphites and related compounds.
- The Group gave 1 lecture (Alan Brisdon) and 2 posters (Andy Ballantyne & Gavin Potter) at the International Fluorine Symposium in Shanghai.
2003
- Ian Crossley gets his PhD - his thesis reports a series of trifluoropropynyl-containing compounds derived from the CFC-replacement, HFC-245fa.
- Jackie Greenall gets her PhD - her work involved elemental fluorination of nitrogen bases and their uses as fluorinating agents.
2002
- UMIST hosts the 2nd RSC Fluorine Subject Group Meeting AND Ian Crossley (shown with Prof Eric Banks) won the best presentation prize for his talk concerning trifluoropropynyl-containing compounds.
2001
- Alan Brisdon is invited as a plenary lecturer at the ACS Fifteenth Winter Fluorine Conference in Florida, USA. Jackie Greenall also presents her work at this meeting.
